The Rendezvous is proud to launch this section of our website by celebrating Glenn Moreland, a true Fort Davis original and a local treasure.
You're more likely to run into his wife, Patty, on State Street in her painting studio. Glenn, on the other hand, is usually at home in his workshop-building, restoring, or repairing chuck wagons and other forms of transportation that date back to the 1800s. Step into his shop and you've stepped into another era.
Glenn is a blacksmith, wheelwright, wainwright, a member of the National Stagecoach & Freightwagon Association, and the American Chuckwagon Association. The knowledge and skill required to build and maintain chuck wagons, stagecoaches, and farm wagons from the days of Gunsmoke are extraordinarily rare today. Yet here in Fort Davis, that tradition lives on through Glenn's hands and hard-earned expertise.
Pictured below is a chuck wagon Glenn built from a John Deere farm wagon. It is now housed at Fort Davis Cow Camp in a private museum, where it stands as both a working artifact and a testament to his craftmanship.
As impressive as his blacksmithing talents are, Glenn's creativity doesn't stop there. He has won many awards cooking in Chuckwagon Cookoffs around the country. He is also a singer-songwriter, fiddle and guitar player, cowboy poet, and storyteller-carrying forward the music, humor, and grit of the West just as faithfully as he preserves its wagons and tools.
Glenn Moreland lives here in Fort Davis, and that fact alone says a lot about what makes this place special. He is part of the living history of our town, and we're honored to share his story.
